MTV Boom Award - First Prize
InternetPressOffice.com - Canons High School have sailed away from the inaugural UK
MTV/Adobe Boom! Music Video Academy Awards with a First Prize Academy
Award. Competing against schools from all over the UK they managed to battle through several
panels of judges, finally being called into MTV Studios with 15 other short listed schools. Their award
was the last to be announced at the presentation ceremony. The unforgettable moment was described by Head of Art and Associate Artistic Consultant,
Mr. Simon Lordan, as "electrifying". "It was a shot across the bow of many other resource-rich and better
placed schools", he said.
Head Teacher, Bruce Goddard explained, "We were fortunate enough to host an
MTV/Adobe workshop earlier in the year and the resources that were left with
us by Adobe enabled us to explore new and exciting educational territory."
But it was down to the creative skills and passions of the students to bring home the treasured trophy. Co-produced by Year 11 students
Ravi Kotecha and Zac Patterson, the video was set to the music of Jamilia's "Super Star"
and depicted the cute and romantic story of two teenagers whose childhood crush for one another endured ten years of separation.
The music video was praised by the judging panel for its excellent story telling, fine editing which included precise lip synchronization, and
action events synchronized to the lyrics. The student producers also used attractive photographic shots with a balance of lighting,
colours, special effects, camera angles and zooms.
Since their win, Head of Performing Arts Mr. Ian Patterson, has represented
MTV and Adobe as a presenter at the inaugural Curzon Summer Short Film
School in Soho. Canon's music video was the main exhibit used by Mr. Patterson in his one hour presentation entitled "From Ideas to Awards".
He presented the processes his students went through to produce their
music video. Italian short film writer, Natascia Radice described Canon's presentation as "inspirational".
"The Summer Short Film School has linked us with industry specialists who have offered to assist our current student production crew," Mr
Patterson stated. "We have recently had a visit from the owner of a digital television
station who has offered to mentor our students". Ravi Kotecha has since embarked on some exciting
music video projects including Director of "A Lullaby to an Anxious Child" starring rock
star, Sting; as well as becoming the country's youngest producer of a weekly community program
broadcast on Sky Digital.
Ravi's MTV Boom! Co-Producer, Zac Patterson is undertaking college
studies with a hope to be employed in the film industry. He is an active member of
his college's Short Film Club and has published a number of successful short animation films on the Internet.
"We like to think that as a technology high school our students are given
wide scope to develop their skills and achieve their aspirations. The Adobe MTV Boom!
Programme, while mainly an extra-curricula activity, is now being incorporating into the junior school music curriculum as part of their
"Music and the Media" studies. We are now seeing some encouraging
results. It has also offered cross-curricula activities involving music, art and
drama."
