Creative Writing - Reflections

by The Consulting Editors at AskProfessors.com

Does writing reflect the writer's or poet's inner-self? Where do the reflections come from if not from the deepest recesses of the writer's mind?

Can the writer reflect something that is pure, untainted imagination?  In other words, starting with zero conscious or unconscious knowledge, can a writer create something totally original?

Take science fiction, for instance. How does the writer create a brand new world?  New scientific laws may apply to such a  world. Life may be wholly different from what we are used to on Earth. The writer's imagination must be allowed to reign free without any limits or boundaries.

But can the writer create a brand new world only because he or she is aware about our world? Can new scientific laws be dreamed up without any knowledge about existing scientific rules? Does the definition of life - as we know it - limit the writer's imagination?

Take another example. A baby is born with "a silver spoon" in his or her mouth, and grows up enjoying everything material wealth can buy. He or she then becomes a writer. Can that person write convincingly about abject poverty? Or can such writing only be truly moving if it comes from the heart - when the writer has personally experienced devastating poverty?

Each and every writer or poet is unique. That means you will not find standard answers to the above questions that will fit perfectly each time. Even when you interview authors or poets, they may not be aware about the precise influences that shape their "imaginative" works.

Good writing - like life itself - is never two dimensional. For example, do you ask your reader to empathize with one character or another. What happens if both characters are devil worshippers? The reader may not be for one character or the other - instead, he or she may prefer a character who is truly moral and not prostituted by power or greed.

Most creative writers willingly stretch the imagination even if this involves a tortuous journey.  They know that when the final word is written, true satisfaction is their guaranteed reward.
